One number summarises everything that matters about a refrigeration system or heat pump: how many kilowatt-hours of heat it moves for each kilowatt-hour of electricity it consumes. That ratio, the coefficient of performance (COP), is what you compare machines with, what you track to catch deterioration, and what every improvement in this course ultimately raises. This lesson defines the family of performance metrics properly, shows what physics limits them, and prices what a COP point is worth.
