Energy Intensity: kWh per Hectolitre

Typical thermal and electrical intensity benchmarks, why craft breweries run less efficiently than macro-breweries, and the water-energy link.

A brewery's total energy bill tells you almost nothing on its own โ€” a brewery using 500,000 kWh a year could be excellent or terrible, depending on whether it made 10,000 hectolitres or 40,000. The way to compare breweries fairly, to each other and to their own history, is energy intensity: energy per hectolitre of beer produced. This is the same normalisation principle from the monitoring & targeting course, applied to the one driver that matters most in a brewery: production volume.
