Metering & Monitoring the Data Centre

The measurement points a trustworthy PUE needs, branch-circuit monitoring, and turning a DCIM system into an energy tool rather than an alarm console.

Data centres are simultaneously the best-instrumented and worst-measured buildings in the UK. A typical facility has thousands of sensor points feeding a BMS or DCIM platform, every rack's power is visible somewhere, and yet ask for a defensible annual PUE, or which hall drove last month's increase, and many operators are reduced to estimates. The gap is never hardware; it is measurement structure: knowing which meters define which boundary, and turning a wall of trend data into the handful of ratios that manage the site. This lesson sets out the metering hierarchy a data centre needs and how to make the data earn its keep.
