Metering & Electrical Monitoring
What energy meters measure, power quality, and harmonic distortion.

Everything this course has covered, volts and amps, power factor, three-phase loads, demand charges, becomes manageable only when it is measured. This closing lesson maps the metering an energy manager actually has to work with on a UK site, what each layer can reveal, and how a first monitoring habit turns meter data into money.
The fiscal meter: the site's official record
Every supply has a fiscal meter, the one the supplier bills from. On larger sites it records consumption every half hour, producing 48 readings a day and 17,520 a year, and this half-hourly (HH) data is the single most valuable free dataset in energy management. Suppliers provide it on request, often through an online portal. Modern fiscal metering also records the quantities earlier lessons introduced: maximum demand, and the reactive energy (kVArh) that reveals the site's power factor month by month. Smaller supplies increasingly have smart meters recording at similar resolution, so the same analysis is available well below industrial scale.
The first habit with HH data costs nothing: look at one ordinary week as a chart. The working day should be visible as a plateau, nights and weekends as a floor. That floor is the baseload, and it is where investigations usually start.

Sub-metering: seeing inside the total
The fiscal meter lumps the whole site into one number. Sub-meters break it apart: a meter on the chiller plant, the compressed air system, a production line or a tenant area attributes consumption to the thing consuming it. Costs are modest (a few hundred pounds per point installed is typical), and modern units clamp around existing cables rather than requiring supply interruption.
The guidance from the meter data lesson in the M&T course applies directly: sub-meter what you intend to manage, add points progressively where the whole-site analysis raises questions, and reconcile new meters against the fiscal record before trusting them. From meters to monitoring
Data is only a saving when someone compares it to an expectation. The full discipline, baselines, normalisation for weather and activity, exception reports, is the subject of the monitoring and targeting course, which follows directly from this one. The starter version needs nothing but the HH portal and a spreadsheet: know your baseload, know your typical weekday peak, glance weekly, and ask "why?" whenever either moves. Most sites' first significant electrical finding comes from exactly that routine within a month or two of starting it.
An energy manager inherits, free of charge, a measurement system recording the site's electrical behaviour every thirty minutes, together with demand and power factor history. Before any survey, any capital project or any consultant, the highest-value first step is simply claiming that data and looking at it. Everything else in electrical energy management builds on the habit.
