Air Compression Fundamentals3 / 13

Pressure, Flow & Energy Loss

Bar, CFM, power; how pressure drop wastes energy.

10 min read · Jacob Willis, Net Zero Lead · Last reviewed July 2026

One number governs a compressed air system's running cost more than any other, and it is set by a screwdriver: the generation pressure. Every extra bar the compressor must reach costs energy across every cubic metre the site consumes, feeds every leak a little faster, and pushes more air through every unregulated use. Understanding the pressure-energy relationship, and the flow units the trade quotes, is the foundation for the cheapest saving in the whole course.
