Assessing Steam System Efficiency
Measuring steam quality, trap performance, and distribution losses.
10 min read · Jacob Willis, Net Zero Lead · Last reviewed July 2026
Before improving a steam system you need to know where its energy currently goes, and the honest answer on most sites is: nobody has checked for years. A structured efficiency assessment follows the energy from the gas meter to the process and back, attributing losses to each stage: combustion, blowdown, distribution, traps and condensate. This lesson covers the generation end, where the first and largest losses live, and sets up the loss inventory the rest of the course fills in.
In this lesson
