Capstone: Lighting Diagnostics

Hands-on: diagnose eight lighting call-outs — over-lighting, LED retrofit, scheduling, occupancy, daylight, ballast losses, commissioning and cheap-LED failure — then calculate, verify and prescribe the fix.

You've learned how light is measured, why LED wins, and how the controls layers — scheduling, occupancy and daylight — stack up. This capstone walks you round a building as the lighting auditor, meter in hand, to find the waste and cost the fixes. Lighting is 15–40% of electricity in many commercial buildings, and almost all of the waste falls into a simple hierarchy: the wrong level of light, the wrong source, or light on at the wrong time or in the wrong place. Some of these you'll crack with a quick sum; others you reason out from what you see and measure.
