LED Retrofit Strategy & Payback

Replacing fluorescent/halogen with LED; typical payback, quality concerns.

Replacing old lamps with LED is one of the most reliable energy projects available: mature technology, large savings, and paybacks often under three years and sometimes under one. It is the measure that tops more audit opportunity lists than any other. But doing it well takes more than buying the cheapest bulbs, and the difference between a good retrofit and a poor one is mostly in specification and design rather than the decision to use LED. This lesson covers the savings case, what drives the payback, the lamp-versus-luminaire choice, and the quality pitfalls.
