Chillers and cooling systems are major electrical loads, and their efficiency is highly sensitive to maintenance: a neglected chiller can lose a large fraction of its COP, and run up big electricity bills, while still apparently working. Because they consume so much electricity and degrade so readily, chiller maintenance offers some of the largest energy savings in building services. This lesson covers the dominant factor (condenser cleanliness), refrigerant charge, the air side, cooling towers, controls, and the routine, complementing the refrigeration course.
