Capstone: Motors & Drives Diagnostics

Hands-on: work out load factor, affinity-law savings, power factor and payback, then diagnose and decide on eight real motor call-outs.

25 min read · Jacob Willis, Net Zero Lead

You've learned how motors work, where they lose energy, why efficiency class and sizing matter, what variable-speed drives do, and how power factor and demand drive the bill. This capstone puts you on the shop floor as the auditor, and like real life, the answer is often a calculation away, and sometimes the right move is to do nothing yet. Some of these call-outs you'll crack with a quick sum: a load factor, an affinity-law saving, a power-factor correction, a payback. Others you reason out from the symptoms. And a couple are financial judgments: rewind or replace, upgrade now or wait for failure. Read the raw panel, work out what the prize is worth, then diagnose and prescribe.
