Capstone: Insulation Diagnostics

Hands-on: diagnose eight insulation call-outs — bare pipes and valves, an unlagged vessel, economic thickness, a sweating cold pipe, material choice, surface safety and lagging removed in maintenance — then calculate, verify and prescribe the fix.

You've learned to calculate heat loss, choose materials by their conductivity, find the economic thickness, lag pipes and vessels, control condensation on cold lines, and insulate hot surfaces to a safe touch temperature. This capstone walks you round a plant with a thermal camera, finding the heat bleeding away and prescribing the right fix for each. Insulation is where the cheapest, fastest-payback projects in any facility hide — bare hot surfaces bleed heat continuously, and a thermal-imaging survey of any plant room lights them up. But "add insulation" isn't always the whole answer: the thickness is set by economics and by safety, the material by temperature, moisture and fire, and the job is only done if the fittings are covered…
