The opaque elements of a building, walls, roof and floor, carry the bulk of fabric heat loss, and each is insulated differently with its own pitfalls. This lesson works through the practical insulation of each element and the two rules that apply to all of them: continuity of the insulation layer, and managing moisture. The buildings-and-envelope course covers the whole-building retrofit strategy and economics; this lesson is the element-by-element craft.
