Pipe Insulation: Thickness & Material

Pipe diameter, temperature, ambient, and economic insulation thickness.

10 min read · Jacob Willis, Net Zero Lead · Last reviewed July 2026

Bare hot pipes and vessels bleed heat continuously, usually in plant rooms where nobody sees the cost, and pipe insulation (lagging) is one of the cheapest, fastest-payback measures in any facility. The heat is being lost every hour the system runs, the fix is well-understood, and the payback is often under a year. This lesson covers the scale of the loss, how thickness is chosen from standards, which material suits which service, and why cold pipes need a completely different approach.
