Ground & Aquifer Thermal Storage

Boreholes, aquifer storage, seasonal shifting from ground.

The ground itself can be a vast thermal store. Ground and aquifer storage systems use the earth's stable temperature and effectively unlimited volume to store heat and coolth, often seasonally, at scales no tank could match. Almost always they work with heat pumps, which lift the modest ground temperature to a useful level. This lesson covers why the ground works, the two main approaches (borehole and aquifer), their synergy with heat pumps, and their economics.
