Phase-Change Materials & Ice Storage

PCM (paraffin, salt hydrates), ice-on-coil, latent heat density.

Where space is tight or a constant temperature is needed, latent storage using phase-change materials and ice offers far higher energy density than a water tank. The trade-off is cost and complexity, so latent storage is chosen when sensible storage genuinely cannot do the job rather than as a default. This lesson covers phase-change materials and their transition temperatures, ice storage for cooling, PCMs built into building fabric, and the practical challenges.
