An energy audit is a structured investigation of where a site's energy goes, what it costs, and which improvements would pay. It is the foundation activity of the whole profession: almost every successful efficiency project starts life as a line in an audit report. Done well, an audit replaces opinion ("the boilers are probably fine") with evidence ("boiler 2 runs at 78% efficiency and a £3,000 tune-up would recover £4,500 a year"). This lesson covers why audits earn their keep, the three depths of audit and when each is appropriate, and what a good one actually delivers.
