Heat Pumps as Renewable (COP as Leverage)

How heat pumps use renewable electricity more efficiently than direct heat.

9 min read · Jacob Willis, Net Zero Lead · Last reviewed July 2026

Heat pumps are often listed among renewable technologies, which puzzles people, since they run on electricity. The key is that they move far more heat than the energy they consume, harvesting renewable heat from the environment. Understanding why a heat pump counts as renewable, and why it is the keystone of heat decarbonisation, ties this course to the refrigeration and heat pumps course that covers the machines themselves. This lesson covers the renewable logic, COP as leverage, the renewable-electricity synergy, and how to maximise the benefit.
