Wind Turbines (Small-Scale)

Wind potential, turbine types, noise, visual impact, planning constraints.

Wind turbines convert moving air into electricity. At large scale wind is a cornerstone of the grid; at small scale for individual buildings it is far more situational, and often disappointing. The reason is one unforgiving physical law that rewards genuinely windy sites and punishes poor ones severely. This lesson covers how a turbine works, the cube law and siting, the reality of small-scale wind, where it does work, and the practical considerations.

In this lesson

  • 01How a turbine works, and the cube law
  • 02Small-scale wind: the reality
  • 03Where small and medium wind works
